As you may be aware, all Primary Care Trusts in England have been tasked with developing a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment which must be published by the 1st February 2011. To provide a good service the PCT needs to review regularly what services they have, what local people need and how things might change in the future.
Through the development of a PNA they will then be able to look at how best to commission or buy the services the public in Liverpool want from their pharmacies.
It will also help them to establish if there are any gaps in services, to explore future provision and potential new services. The government has asked all Primary Care Trusts to put a PNA in place by February next year.
The Next Stage:
When they have mapped current pharmacy services, explored possible future provision, and taken on board comments from stakeholders on this draft document, the next stage will be to draw together the data into meaningful conclusions about what services Liverpool PCT might want to commission and how. They aim to produce a set of Commissioning Intentions which can be used to communicate the direction to all stakeholders and link to Liverpool PCT’s overarching strategy. Feedback will be given to stakeholders in December 2010.
