Have your say - Your Choice of GP Practice

If you could register with a GP practice anywhere, what would you do?

11/03/2010

Last September, the Secretary of State for Health announced the Government’s intention to abolish the current system of GP practice boundaries and highlighted action PCTs could take to better ensure patients can register at a GP practice of their choice.

On the 4th March 2010, a 12 week public consultation was launched seeking views from the public, patient groups and from those who work in primary care or wider health and care services on how we can put in place a system that enables patients to have a wider more meaningful choice of GP practice.

Most people want a GP practice that’s near where they live. But some find it difficult to see their GP – for example, people who work full-time and can’t get to a practice near their home during the day. Other people would like to be able to choose a practice they prefer because it has longer opening hours or different services available. At the moment, people have to choose a GP practice that’s close to them and make sure they live within its catchment area. But the Government is looking at options to change this, so people can choose a GP practice that best suits their needs.
