Transgender Awareness Training

Thursday 14 April 2011 at 12.30 to 4.00pm - Cancer Research UK, 200 London Road

17\03\2011

Date: Thursday 14 April 2011 at 12.30 to 4.00pm

Venue: Cancer Research UK, 200 London Road, Liverpool L3 9TA.

The Trans Awareness Training Event will look at what it means to be transgender, particularly in relation to recent legislation changes. The Equality Act 2010 brings together nine separate pieces of legislation into one single Act simplifying the law and strengthening it in important ways to help tackle discrimination and inequality.

The Act significantly extends the rights of transgender people.

  • To increase understanding of transgender issues, helping people to understand what it means to be transgender.
  • To educate voluntary and community organisations in transgender legislation.
  • To provide best practice information to support organisations in demonstrating their commitment and knowledge of the specific needs issues and barriers facing transgender people.

The training will be delivered by In Trust Training.

In-Trust members will provide transgender equality training which will seek to raise awareness and understanding of the issues facing transgender people in both employment and access to services.

  • Understanding issues in employment, promoting best practice around employing people from this community
  • Working with both voluntary and public sector organisations to identify the barriers to service delivery faced by this community, how to combat transphobia
  • Recognising the need for promoting greater acceptance and rights for all ‘trans’ people and providing advice and support with transitioning.

The training session allows for question and answer opportunities and the trainers will actively encourage questions to be used as a tool for increasing personal understanding of transgender sensitivities.

Transgender equality is seen as the newest area of equality and organisations will benefit from increased understanding not only of their legal commitments but how to effectively engage with transgender people as staff, stakeholders and service users.
